Shareef and Khadija's Story

When war broke out in Syria. the Almohammed family fled for their lives—only to spend nearly a decade in a refugee camp. After years of waiting, the family finally came to the United States and was resettled in Fargo, North Dakota by the Global Refuge team.

As they settled into their new home, they shared their hopes and dreams for their family’s future in “the country of safety.”

Fargo, North Dakota might seem like a strange place for Global Refuge to launch our first-ever field office. But if you ask some of Fargo’s biggest fans, it’s not odd at all—in fact, it’s perfect.

In the past five years or so, immigrants and refugees have transformed Fargo’s culture, economy, and communities and have strengthened the small Midwest city in surprising ways—and they’re just getting started.
