Washington, D.C.— The Department of Homeland Security today announced its designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Sudan, and a redesignation and extension of TPS for South Sudan for 18 months. Together, these decisions will extend protections to an estimated 7,000 additional people.

In response, Krish O’Mara Vignarajah, President and CEO of Global Refuge, said:

“We applaud Secretary Mayorkas for designating and extending TPS for Sudan and South Sudan. These countries have been ravaged by political violence and turmoil, devastating drought and flooding, and a lack of access to humanitarian aid. These protections will allow people already in the United States to continue contributing to our nation without living in fear of deportation to harrowing in-country conditions. This is an important step towards implementing racial justice within immigration policy, and to that end, we encourage the administration to deliver on its promise to designate Cameroon for TPS.”
