Washington, D.C. – With immigration poised to take center stage at the first presidential debate on Thursday evening, Global Refuge, the nation’s largest faith-based nonprofit dedicated exclusively to serving refugees, asylum seekers, and other immigrants, shares its recommendations for a thoughtful and productive conversation.

Krish O’Mara Vignarajah, President and CEO of Global Refuge, expressed urgency and the need for civility ahead of the first presidential debate scheduled for Thursday evening.

“As immigration comes to the forefront, candidates must address the issue with compassion and common sense, grounded in both human rights and practical policy solutions. Our nation’s approach to immigration reflects our values, making it imperative that our leaders engage in discourse that respects the dignity and humanity of all people.”

Vignarajah also noted the importance of an affirmative, fact-based case for immigration in the face of mounting misinformation, including the so-called “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory.

“While misinformation about immigrants runs rampant, there has not been a counter-balancing argument in favor of the tremendous benefits they bring. These newcomers have helped cool inflation, alleviate labor shortages, generate tax revenues, start businesses, feed our families, care for our sick, and bolster Social Security. In other words, voters deserve facts over fearmongering.”

As the debate unfolds, Global Refuge remains committed to advocating for policies that reflect these principles and ensure that America remains a land of opportunity and refuge for all who need it.
