Global Refuge Celebrates Election of Rev. Yehiel Curry as New Presiding Bishop of the ELCA

Global Refuge joins the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in celebrating the election of Bishop Yehiel Curry as its new presiding bishop.

Bishop Curry is a longtime pastor, community organizer, and—as he shared in his remarks at the ELCA Churchwide Assembly—a mission developer at heart. His leadership is rooted in faith, shaped by service, and animated by the biblical call to love mercy, do justice, and walk humbly with God. We also extend our profound gratitude to Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton for her 12 years of devoted leadership.

As we enter this new chapter together, we are inspired to continue living out our shared calling to welcome the stranger, accompany the vulnerable, and extend compassion and care to our newest neighbors. Lutheran congregations across the country have long embodied the hands and feet of this sacred mission — opening their doors, their hearts, and their communities to those seeking refuge. We are grateful for their prophetic witness and look forward to deepening our partnership with Presiding Bishop-elect Curry as we work together towards safety and belonging for all who call our country home.
