Daniel’s Path to Confidence and Stability

Global Refuge Staff

March 26, 2026

As the oldest son in a family of 10 living on a small farmstead in Huehuetenango, 16-year-old Daniel felt a deep responsibility to support his family.

The corn and beans they grow and the small number of cows, goats, and chickens they raise are the family’s only means of food security—which placed great pressure on Daniel to contribute economically to the household.

In search of better opportunities for his family, Daniel attempted to migrate to the United States, but was detained at the Mexican border, where he spent four months in a shelter in Texas before being returned to Guatemala.

Upon joining the Camino a Casa program, Daniel was on the verge of dropping out of high school. Global Refuge staff helped Daniel enroll in weekend educational courses, specializing in agroecology, which allowed him to build on his existing knowledge of farming and animal care.

Daniel also faced significant dental needs that began during his time in the U.S. The unfinished treatment affected his confidence; he avoided smiling and social interactions, often hiding his face beneath a cowboy hat. Our program helped Daniel complete intensive dental treatments and our staff accompanied him to multiple procedures. Combined with ongoing psychological support, these services helped Daniel become more comfortable communicating with others, which helped build his self-confidence.

To further support Daniel’s reintegration and economic stability, Camino a Casa assisted in the purchase of a dairy goat. By selling fresh milk daily to members of his community, Daniel is now able to generate income that contributes to his family’s livelihood.

Throughout his time in the program, Daniel has experienced a profound transformation in both mindset and confidence. Daniel now sees education as central to his future and has set realistic goals to complete high school, pursue further studies, and expand his livestock work. This coordinated support has played a decisive role in his journey toward stability, confidence, and connection to his family and community.
